What to Expect During Your Physio Appointment?

Physiotherapists treat the musculoskeletal systems and are often recommended by GPs because of their ability to decrease pain and stiffness. A variety of conditions can also be assisted by physiotherapists. Their goal is to make people’s lives easier and their bodies function better. We can work together if something seems ‘off’ or needs improvement.

A consultation is a thorough evaluation and informed diagnosis. It also includes a discussion about your medical history. There will no single treatment plan that is the same for every patient, regardless of whether they have the same conditions. There are many treatment options available and your physiotherapist should talk with you about them before you start treatment.

Your physiotherapist should develop treatment and management plans that suit your needs so that together, you can address the specific problems you are experiencing. You and your goals for physiotherapy are the focal points to the treatment.

Physiotherapists use a range of techniques which include things like joint mobilisation and manipulation, muscular and myofascial release, trigger point release, manual therapy, dry needling, and exercise therapy. They might also recommend active therapies such as orthotics, taping and hydrotherapy, rebalancing exercises, clinical Pilates or electrotherapy. Whatever treatment your physiotherapist suggests, they have considered it thoroughly and fully believe that the treatment they recommend will assist you to reach your goals.

Answers to Your Physiotherapy Questions

Do I need to be referred to a physiotherapist?
Physiotherapists can be considered first-contact independent practitioners. If you have an acute injury, or chronic pain or need to visit us, you don’t require a doctor’s referral. The physiotherapists of A Pinch Of Physiotherapy are more than happy to work alongside your healthcare team; be they podiatrists, dentists, GPs or naturopaths; and are delighted to accept Enhanced Primary Care plans from your treating physician.
What qualifications are required for physios?
Physiotherapy is a highly regulated profession in Australia. This includes successful completion of university-level tertiary education, active membership in The Australian Physiotherapist Association and registration with The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. To maintain active membership within these regulatory bodies, it is a professional requirement that all members undertake a minimum of 20 hours of Continuing Practice Education (CPE) each calendar year. Patients can feel assured that their physiotherapist has been board-certified, adheres to an ethical code and is up to date with the latest research in their field.
How many physiotherapy sessions will I need?
The number of treatments you may need will vary based on your individual goals, needs and treatment plan. For some people may only need a couple of sessions, while others may require a more ongoing and long-term plan.
What should I wear for my physio appointment?
It doesn’t matter if you dress up or down. Wear what you feel comfortable in and, if possible, something that will allow us access to the affected area. For example, if you have knee pain you may want to wear shorts, or if you have shoulder pain, a singlet may be a good idea.
Is physiotherapy covered under Medicare or any private health insurance?
It all depends on your particular case. Physiotherapy coverage might be available through Medicare with an Enhanced Primary Care plan. Private health insurance may or not include physiotherapy – check with your provider.
How can I tell if physiotherapy is the appropriate treatment for my injury?
Contact us if you are unsure if physiotherapy might be right for you. Our physiotherapists will assess your needs and recommend the best treatment options for you.
