What To Expect From Your Physio Appointment?

Physiotherapists deal with the musculoskeletal and are often recommended by GPs for treatment that can reduce stiffness and pain. A variety of conditions can also be assisted by physiotherapists. Their goal is to make people’s lives easier and their bodies function better. We can work together if something seems ‘off’ or needs improvement.

The initial consultation includes a detailed assessment, diagnosis and treatment. This takes into consideration your medical history as well as relevant symptoms. No two patients’ treatment plans will look the same, even if they have the same condition, so it goes to show that physiotherapy truly is about you! You have many options and your physiotherapist will discuss them with you.

Your physiotherapist will develop treatment and management plans to meet your specific needs. It doesn’t matter if you have a sore knee or headaches. Your treatment will be tailored to you and what you expect from physiotherapy.

Physiotherapists employ a variety of techniques, such as joint mobilisation, manipulation, trigger point relief, manual therapy and dry needling. They may also recommend active treatment such as electrotherapy, taping, hydrotherapy, and clinical Pilates. Your physiotherapist will recommend the right treatment for you. They have carefully considered the options and are confident that they can aid you to achieve your goals.

Answers to Your Physiotherapy Questions

Do I need a referral to see a physio?
Physiotherapists can be seen without the need for a referral from a doctor. A Pinch Of Physiotherapy physiotherapists will gladly work with any healthcare team including podiatrists and dentists and can accept Enhanced Primary Care Plans from your GP.
What qualifications does a physio have?
Physiotherapy in Australia has a strict regulatory board. It requires successful completion of at least one year of university-level tertiary study, active membership with The Australian Physiotherapist Association or AHPRA registration and active membership with The Australian Physiotherapist Association. All members must complete at least 20 hours of continuing education each year in order to remain active members of these regulatory bodies. This allows patients to feel secure that their physiotherapist remains a board-certified professional. They are subject to an ethical code, remain current with research and techniques and have met all of these requirements.
How many sessions of physiotherapy are required?
Your individual goals, needs and condition will determine how many treatments you need. Some may only require a few sessions. Others may need a longer-term, more intensive plan.
What should I wear during a physio appointment?
You don’t have to dress up to impress! Wear what you feel comfortable in and, if possible, something that will allow us access to the affected area.
Can I pay for physiotherapy through Medicare or private insurance?
It all depends on your particular case. Physiotherapy coverage may be available through Medicare with an Enhanced Primary Care Plan, and if you have private health cover this may or may not include physiotherapy– we recommend you check with your insurer if you’re unsure.
How do I determine if physiotherapy is right for me?
If you’re unsure if physiotherapy is right for you, the best way to find out is to get in touch with us. Our physiotherapists will assess your needs, and then determine the best treatment options.
