What is Physiotherapy and how does it work?

Visiting physiotherapy means you want to feel and move better. It’s so much more than this!

Physiotherapy, in addition to being a form of physical therapy, is an art form and a discipline that has been evolving over many, many years. It was created out of the understanding that a personal injury does not necessarily have to be the end of a person’s journey in life. Whatever the injury, there is physiotherapy that can ease your discomfort and feel better. It promotes recovery and helps you return to the activities you love.

There are many physiotherapy treatments that may suit you, such as dry needling, massage and joint mobilisation. We work together to find the best form of treatment that suits you. It’s your body, you are the captain of your ship. We’re here to support you stay afloat.

Through the art and discipline of physiotherapy new meaning can be restored back to your life. In time, this may enable you to truly live your life again in a manner that brings you joy. If you’re a dedicated footy player, an aspiring dancer, or want to keep up with the grandkids, living your dream may be closer than you think!

Physiotherapy is a useful tool that can maximise your mobility and well-being, regardless of your age, condition or injury. Physiotherapy could be the right treatment for you, whether you’re a student or an office worker or senior citizen.

What To Expect From Your Physio Appointment?

Physiotherapists treat the musculoskeletal systems and are often recommended by GPs because of their ability to decrease pain and stiffness. Physiotherapists also work with people with a variety of conditions, aiming to support their bodies to move better and get the most out of life. If you have any concerns or feel like something isn’t right, we are the team for you!

A consultation is a thorough evaluation and informed diagnosis. It also includes a discussion about your medical history. No two patients’ treatment plans will look the same, even if they have the same condition, so it goes to show that physiotherapy truly is about you! Your treatment options are diverse and your physiotherapist should discuss them with you before you begin treatment.

Your physiotherapist should develop treatment and management plans that suit your needs so that together, you can address the specific problems you are experiencing. You and your goals for physiotherapy are the focal points to the treatment.

Physiotherapists employ a variety of techniques, such as joint mobilisation, manipulation, trigger point relief, manual therapy and dry needling. They might also recommend active therapies such as orthotics, taping and hydrotherapy, rebalancing exercises, clinical Pilates or electrotherapy. Whatever your physiotherapist suggests for you, they’ve considered it carefully and wholly believe that the treatment/s they’ve selected have the best chance of supporting you reach your goals.

Answers to Your Physiotherapy Questions

Do physiotherapists appointments require a referral?
Physiotherapists can be seen without the need for a referral from a doctor. The physiotherapists of A Pinch Of Physiotherapy are more than happy to work alongside your healthcare team; be they podiatrists, dentists, GPs or naturopaths; and are delighted to accept Enhanced Primary Care plans from your treating physician.
What qualifications do physios have?
Physiotherapy in Australia has a strict regulatory board. It requires successful completion of at least one year of university-level tertiary study, active membership with The Australian Physiotherapist Association or AHPRA registration and active membership with The Australian Physiotherapist Association. It is a requirement for all members to complete at least 20 hours of continuing practice education (CPE) annually in order to maintain an active membership with these regulatory bodies. This allows patients to feel secure that their physiotherapist remains a board-certified professional. They are subject to an ethical code, remain current with research and techniques and have met all of these requirements.
How many physio sessions do I need?
It will depend on your personal goals, needs, and treatment plan. Some may only require a few sessions. Others may need a longer-term, more intensive plan.
What should I wear for my physio appointment?
There’s no need to dress to impress here! You can wear whatever you like, but ensure that we can still work on the affected area of your body. You might wear shorts if your knee pain is severe, and a singlet if you have pain in your shoulders.
Are Medicare and private health insurance accepted for physiotherapy?
It all depends on your particular case. Physiotherapy coverage might be available through Medicare with an Enhanced Primary Care plan. Private health insurance may or not include physiotherapy – check with your provider.
How do I know if physiotherapy is the right treatment type for my injury or condition?
Get in touch with our team if you aren’t sure physiotherapy would be right for your needs. Our physiotherapists will assess your needs, and then determine the best treatment options.
