What to Expect During Your Physio Appointment?

Physiotherapists treat the musculoskeletal systems and are often recommended by GPs because of their ability to decrease pain and stiffness. Physiotherapists also work with people with a variety of conditions, aiming to support their bodies to move better and get the most out of life. We can work together if something seems ‘off’ or needs improvement.

The initial consultation includes a detailed assessment, diagnosis and treatment. This takes into consideration your medical history as well as relevant symptoms. There will no single treatment plan that is the same for every patient, regardless of whether they have the same conditions. Your treatment options are diverse and your physiotherapist should discuss them with you before you begin treatment.

Your physiotherapist must develop treatment and management strategies that suit your condition and goals. You and your goals for physiotherapy are the focal points to the treatment.

A variety of techniques are used by physiotherapists, including joint mobilisation and manipulation, muscle and myofascial releases, trigger point release and manual therapy. Dry needling and exercise therapy are also some of the options. They may also recommend active techniques such as clinical Pilates, rebalancing, orthotics and taping. Whatever treatment your physiotherapist suggests, they have considered it thoroughly and fully believe that the treatment they recommend will assist you to reach your goals.

Your Physiotherapy Questions Answered

Do I need a referral in order to visit a physical therapist?
A physiotherapist is an autonomous first-contact practitioner. This means you don’t need to be referred by a doctor to see us for acute injuries or chronic pain. A Pinch Of Physiotherapy physiotherapists work with other healthcare professionals, such as dentists, podiatrists, GPs, and naturopaths. We are happy to accept Enhanced primary care plans from your treating doctor.
What qualifications does a qualified physiotherapist have?
Physiotherapy in Australia is a highly regulated industry that requires successful completion of university-level tertiary studies, active membership with The Australian Physiotherapist Association (APA) and registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Each member must complete at least 20 hours in continuing practice education each calendar year to keep their membership active. Patients can feel assured that their physiotherapist has been board-certified, adheres to an ethical code and is up to date with the latest research in their field.
How many physiotherapy sessions will I need?
It will depend on your personal goals, needs, and treatment plan. For some, they might only need a few sessions. Others might require a long-term and more comprehensive plan.
Is there a desired clothing for physio treatment?
There’s no need to dress to impress here! Wear whatever you’re comfortable in, and wherever possible, wear something that will allow us to work on the affected area. You might wear shorts if your knee pain is severe, and a singlet if you have pain in your shoulders.
Is physiotherapy covered by Medicare or any private health insurance?
It all depends on your particular case. Physiotherapy coverage may also be available through Medicare under an Enhanced Primary Care plan. Private health insurance may or may not cover physiotherapy. We recommend that you speak with your insurer for advice.
