What to Expect During Your Physio Appointment?

Physiotherapists deal with the musculoskeletal and are often recommended by GPs for treatment that can reduce stiffness and pain. A variety of conditions can also be assisted by physiotherapists. Their goal is to make people’s lives easier and their bodies function better. We are the team to call if you feel something is ‘not quite right’ or you need some extra support.

An initial consultation involves a thorough assessment and informed diagnosis and treatment, which considers relevant symptoms and your medical history. Even if the patient has the same condition, no two treatment plans will be created the same. This goes to show that physiotherapy is all about you. Your treatment options can be varied and should be discussed with your physiotherapist before you begin treatment.

Your physiotherapist should develop treatment and management plans that suit your needs so that together, you can address the specific problems you are experiencing. It doesn’t matter if you have a sore knee or headaches. Your treatment will be tailored to you and what you expect from physiotherapy.

A variety of techniques are used by physiotherapists, including joint mobilisation and manipulation, muscle and myofascial releases, trigger point release and manual therapy. Dry needling and exercise therapy are also some of the options. They may also recommend active treatment such as electrotherapy, taping, hydrotherapy, and clinical Pilates. Whatever your physiotherapist suggests for you, they’ve considered it carefully and wholly believe that the treatment/s they’ve selected have the best chance of supporting you reach your goals.

Answers to Your Physiotherapy Questions

Do I need a referral to see a physio?
Physiotherapists can be considered first-contact independent practitioners. If you have an acute injury, or chronic pain or need to visit us, you don’t require a doctor’s referral. A Pinch Of Physiotherapy physiotherapists work with other healthcare professionals, such as dentists, podiatrists, GPs, and naturopaths. We are happy to accept Enhanced primary care plans from your treating doctor.
What qualifications are required for physios?
Physiotherapy in Australia has a strict regulatory board. It requires successful completion of at least one year of university-level tertiary study, active membership with The Australian Physiotherapist Association or AHPRA registration and active membership with The Australian Physiotherapist Association. Each member must complete at least 20 hours in continuing practice education each calendar year to keep their membership active. This allows patients to feel secure that their physiotherapist remains a board-certified professional. They are subject to an ethical code, remain current with research and techniques and have met all of these requirements.
How many physiotherapy sessions will I need?
Based on your goals, treatment plans and individual needs, the number of treatments that you might need may vary. Some people may only require a few sessions while others might need an ongoing, long-term treatment plan.
What should I wear for my physio appointment?
Here, you don’t need to dress up! Wear what you feel comfortable in and, if possible, something that will allow us access to the affected area. You might wear shorts if your knee pain is severe, and a singlet if you have pain in your shoulders.
Can I pay for physiotherapy through Medicare or private insurance?
It all depends on your particular case. Physiotherapy coverage may also be available through Medicare under an Enhanced Primary Care plan. Private health insurance may or may not cover physiotherapy. We recommend that you speak with your insurer for advice.
How can I tell if physiotherapy is the appropriate treatment for my injury?
If you’re unsure if physiotherapy is right for you, the best way to find out is to get in touch with us. Our physiotherapists will assess your needs and recommend the best treatment options for you.
