What To Expect From Your Physio Appointment?

Physiotherapists are professionals in the musculoskeletal system and are often recommended by GPs for their ability to reduce stiffness and pain. Physiotherapists also work with people with a variety of conditions, aiming to support their bodies to move better and get the most out of life. We are the team to call if you feel something is ‘not quite right’ or you need some extra support.

The initial consultation includes a detailed assessment, diagnosis and treatment. This takes into consideration your medical history as well as relevant symptoms. There will no single treatment plan that is the same for every patient, regardless of whether they have the same conditions. Your treatment options can be varied and should be discussed with your physiotherapist before you begin treatment.

Your physiotherapist will develop treatment and management plans to meet your specific needs. Whether that’s a sore knee, headaches, arthritis, or a sports injury, your treatment is centred around you and what you hope to get out of physiotherapy.

Physiotherapists use a range of techniques which include things like joint mobilisation and manipulation, muscular and myofascial release, trigger point release, manual therapy, dry needling, and exercise therapy. They may also recommend active techniques such as clinical Pilates, rebalancing, orthotics and taping. Whatever treatment your physiotherapist suggests, they have considered it thoroughly and fully believe that the treatment they recommend will assist you to reach your goals.

Answers to Your Physiotherapy Questions

Do I need to be referred to a physiotherapist?
Physiotherapists can be seen without the need for a referral from a doctor. A Pinch Of Physiotherapy physiotherapists will gladly work with any healthcare team including podiatrists and dentists and can accept Enhanced Primary Care Plans from your GP.
What qualifications do physios have?
Physiotherapy in Australia is a highly regulated industry that requires successful completion of university-level tertiary studies, active membership with The Australian Physiotherapist Association (APA) and registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). It is a requirement for all members to complete at least 20 hours of continuing practice education (CPE) annually in order to maintain an active membership with these regulatory bodies. These rules allow patients to be confident that their physiotherapists are board-certified professionals, subject to an ethics code of conduct, and fully informed about current research and techniques in their field.
How many physio sessions do I need?
The number of treatments you may need will vary based on your individual goals, needs and treatment plan. Some may only require a few sessions. Others may need a longer-term, more intensive plan.
Is there a desired clothing for physio treatment?
You don’t have to dress up to impress! Wear what you feel comfortable in and, if possible, something that will allow us access to the affected area. For example, if you have knee pain you may want to wear shorts, or if you have shoulder pain, a singlet may be a good idea.

This depends on your individual circumstances. Physiotherapy coverage may also be available through Medicare under an Enhanced Primary Care plan. Private health insurance may or may not cover physiotherapy. We recommend that you speak with your insurer for advice.
