Causes of ACL Tears

An ACL injury occurs when the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is damaged. The ACL is a band of tissue that connects your thighbone to your shinbone, stabilising your knee joint with twisting and extending movement.

While ACL injuries commonly occur during sports, they may also happen after:

  • Falls and awkward landings
  • Sudden stops
  • Pivoting too suddenly
  • A direct blow to the knee
E

Common ACL Symptoms

Receiving an ACL injury is often characterised as a sharp, severe pain. Many people may also hear or feel a ‘popping’ sensation in their knee. Other common ACL symptoms include:

  • An inability to hold your own weight
  • Difficulty moving
  • A limited range of motion
  • Rapid swelling
  • A feeling of walking on ice, or very unstable surfaces

Targeted Treatments for ACL Rehabilitation

At a Pinch of Prevention, your physiotherapist will carefully assess your injury. Depending on your needs, preferences, and goals, they will then tailor a treatment plan that may improve the recovery process.

This may include:

Sports Physiotherapy

With manual therapy and exercise programs, sports physiotherapy aims to improve mobility, manage pain, and promote your recovery.

Naturopathy

Naturopathy focuses on the whole person, using natural therapies and lifestyle guidance to support your health and well-being.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture uses fine, sterile needles placed in specific areas in an effort to promote circulation, ease pain, and improve your recovery.

Answering Your ACL Rehabilitation Questions

What happens if an ACL injury is left untreated?

An undiagnosed ACL injury will worsen over time, especially if you continue to put weight on your knee or play sport. A partial tear could progress to a full tear, increasing your risk of developing chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis or chronic pain.

Seeking early intervention may help protect your joint and support a smoother recovery. Most ACL injuries will require an MRI scan and possible orthopaedic consultation.

Can you help if I’ve recently had ACL surgery?

At A Pinch of Prevention, our team provides gentle, supportive pre and post-surgical rehabilitation that may help you rebuild muscle strength and confidence in your knee. We work closely with you and your surgeon in an effort to help improve your function, reduce your discomfort, and support your full recovery.

Is there anything I can do to support my recovery at home?

For ACL injuries, it’s best to seek professional support as soon as possible. However, there are a few steps you may take at home to support your recovery. These include:

  • Resting your leg
  • Avoiding physical activity that causes discomfort or instability
  • Applying ice packs
  • Keeping your leg elevated

These at-home steps may help decrease swelling until you can begin guided physiotherapy treatment.

Is exercise physiology the same as exercise therapy?

They’re similar, but not the same. Exercise physiology aims to use movement to manage pain and improve health, while exercise therapy focuses on specific exercise plans that may support recovery and strengthen the body.

What other conditions do you address?

At A Pinch of Prevention, our experienced team are here to support your overall health. We’ve worked with a variety of injuries and conditions, including:
