What is Physiotherapy?

Feeling and moving better is often the goal when seeking healthcare, and physiotherapy certainly helps with that – while also offering a broader range of benefits!

Physiotherapy is more than just a treatment – it’s an art and a discipline shaped over many years. No matter the injury, there’s a form of physiotherapy to help you recover and regain your strength.

A variety of treatments are available, including massage, dry needling, and joint mobilisation. We work with you to find the best fit, helping you take control of your recovery. Physiotherapy can support your mobility and wellbeing at any stage of life.

Our Physio Approach

From injury recovery and prevention to occupational health, pelvic floor support, continence care, and falls risk management, physiotherapy supports many aspects of your health journey.

A Pinch Of Prevention’s physiotherapists are focused on helping you reach your personal physical best, whatever that may look like for you within your own capabilities. Our physiotherapists begin with a thorough assessment and accurate diagnosis, then develop a personalised treatment plan using our 4-step process: Release, Re-educate, Reinforce, and Retain.

Release: Working on the main muscle causing joint dysfunction to promote better movement.

Re-Educate: Guiding the muscles involved in movement to function properly, decreasing discomfort and preventing recurring pain.

Reinforce: Supporting recovery by strengthening muscles and reducing the chance of re-injury.

Retain: Showing you how to preserve proper form during activities, helping you achieve your goals and sustain progress.

From children to older adults, physiotherapy is a flexible approach designed to support a wide range of health concerns, with personalised goals in mind.

Reduce Pain

Physiotherapists use a range of pain management approaches, each designed to help minimise pain and improve quality of life.

What To Expect From Your Physio Appointment?

With a strong focus on the musculoskeletal system, physiotherapists are commonly recommended by GPs to help manage pain and stiffness. We help people move better and get more out of life—so if something feels ‘not quite right’, we’re the team for you!

An initial consultation includes a detailed assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning, taking your symptoms and medical history into account. Every treatment plan is unique—even for the same condition—because physiotherapy is all about you! Your options will be discussed before starting care.

Your physiotherapist works with you to develop a plan that targets your concerns—be it a sore knee, headaches, arthritis, or a sports injury—focusing on your goals for physiotherapy.

Techniques like joint mobilisation, muscle release, dry needling, and tailored exercise therapy are part of physiotherapy care. Whatever is recommended has been thoughtfully chosen to best support your progress.

Your Physiotherapy Questions Answered

Do I need a referral in order to visit a physical therapist?

Physiotherapists can be considered first-contact independent practitioners. If you have an acute injury, or chronic pain or need to visit us, you don’t require a doctor’s referral. The physiotherapists of A Pinch Of Physiotherapy are more than happy to work alongside your healthcare team; be they podiatrists, dentists, GPs or naturopaths; and are delighted to accept Enhanced Primary Care plans from your treating physician.

What qualifications do physios have?

Physiotherapy in Australia has a strict regulatory board. It requires successful completion of at least one year of university-level tertiary study, active membership with The Australian Physiotherapist Association or AHPRA registration and active membership with The Australian Physiotherapist Association. Each member must complete at least 20 hours in continuing practice education each calendar year to keep their membership active. This allows patients to feel secure that their physiotherapist remains a board-certified professional. They are subject to an ethical code, remain current with research and techniques and have met all of these requirements.

How many physio sessions will I need?

Based on your goals, treatment plans and individual needs, the number of treatments that you might need may vary. Some people may only require a few sessions while others might need an ongoing, long-term treatment plan.

What should I wear during a physio appointment?

There’s no need to dress to impress here! Wear what you feel comfortable in and, if possible, something that will allow us access to the affected area. For example, if you have knee pain you may want to wear shorts, or if you have shoulder pain, a singlet may be a good idea.

Is physiotherapy covered by Medicare or any private health insurance?

It all depends on your particular case. Physiotherapy coverage may be available through Medicare with an Enhanced Primary Care Plan, and if you have private health cover this may or may not include physiotherapy– we recommend you check with your insurer if you’re unsure.

How do I know if physiotherapy is the right treatment type for my injury or condition?

Contact us if you are unsure if physiotherapy might be right for you. Our physiotherapists will assess your needs, and then determine the best treatment options.
